During the Summer
In August of 2001, The Salt Lake Tribune had an article in its Sunday Arts section about Class of 1986 graduate John Fulton publishing a book of short stories called “Retribution.” After graduating from Judge, Fulton studied English at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., then taught in Europe for four years before enrolling as a graduate student in Michigan University’s creative writing program. He was working on a novel, “More Than Enough.” Six years later, Tribune writer Brandon Griggs interviewed Fulton again after the publication of his second book of short “and not-too-short” stories, called “The Animal Girl.” By then, Fulton was teaching at the University of Massachusetts-Boston and the father of a baby girl. He had returned to Salt Lake City for a reading of his stories at The Kings English Bookshop.

An illness sidelined McNamara from October to April.
The Board of Trustees, led by Salt Lake Tribune CFO Dominic Welch, was conducting a fundraising campaign, called SCOPE, that aimed to secure $3.5 million for a new physical education facility and fine arts complex. The committee had raised $2.5 million by year’s end. Besides Welsh, the Financial Trustees were Marie Gray, John Henkels, Kitty Curtin, Rev. James Kenny, Don Lochhead, Rev. Thomas McNamara, Rev. John Hedderman, Jess Agraz, Peter Van Orden, Corrine Riekhof, John Speros, Pat Green, Principal John McGean, Bishop William Weigand and Sr. Joan Allem.

The Varsity Cheerleaders were captain Samantha Woolsey, Jennifer Barbiero, Nikki Gray, Lisa Fisher, Yvonne Depauli, Maria Schneckloth, Dawn Kennally and Molly Nichols. The Junior Varsity Cheerleaders were Paula Williams, Nikki Cockle, Lisa Schaffer, Tara Usinowicz, Tiffany Ventura and Kim Maez.
The Judge Follies of 1985 included a performance by Principal John McGean and faculty member Joe Onstott. The greeters were 1986 class members Rosemarie Syms, Katie Walker and Wendy Talboys.
Providing Christian Service, such as offering aid to mentally challenged adults at Columbus Community Center and tutoring, were Devry Garity, Kim Wenhold, Maria Lavadie, Bill Batt, Camille Sadler, Michelle Vidaurre, Mark Tyler, Molly Musgrove, Lisa Nelson, Angel Lopez, Gia Pignanelli and Carrie Atkin. Their moderators were Julie O’Brien and Sr. Renee Generoux.
“The Press” was the name of a band that played at several stomps.
Serving as Peer Counselors were Katy Peters, Andrea Henkels, Trish Uzelac, Lisa Tedesco, Laurie Hipley, Steve Skamnes, Kris Kaly, Amy Adamson, Michelle Florin, Sue Glancey, Karla Jahne, Michelle Powers, Chris Williams, Vicki Stewart and Matt Williams. Their moderator was Marilyn Lafferty.
The Bulldog Press editor-in-chief was Elke Schaumberg. Her staff included Buddy Mele, James Letter, Mary Moskal, Nikki Gray, Karla Jahne, Colleen McHugh, Maria Schneckloth, Dawn Webber, Yvonne Vong, Miriam Sweeney, Jon Cervino, Laura Lochhead, Michelle Viduarre, Andrea Letter, Joe Walz, Colleen Jones, Marie Lavadie, James Chellis, Kristen Libsch, Greg Simos, Angel Lopez and Cecil Jacobs. Chris Sloan was the moderator.
Sandy Seiner was drum major for Crimson Pride, which included the Drill Team, the Flag Team and the Marching Band. It took third place in the Western States Competition.

The a cappella choir consisted of David Ulibarri, Donald Rael, Tony Green, Jason Clark, Chris Perkins, Sandy Seiner, Tom Adams, Michael Cervino, Ted McDonough, Teresa Harris, Rob Marker, Steve Romo, Monica Garcia, Tammy Zaelit and Rebecca Lubkeman. They were directed by David Asman, who also directed the Cadet Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble and the Marching Band.
Making up the Junior Choir, also directed by David Asman, were Scott Vassalluzzo, Kevin Jemison, Jason Allen, Chad McCarthy, Kenny Reynoso, Jason Morton, Suzanne Reiland, Allison Costello, Charissa De Las Casas, Stephanie Cafarelli, Noel Abel, Lisa Maranowski, Beth Anderson, Scott Larrabee, Chris Jones, Katie Talboys and Julie Provost.
Some of Tom Bettin’s top art students were Kristina Obermann, Jane McDonough, Albert Winnett, Tom Bracken and Robert Best.
Philippa White was editor-in-chief of the Basilean yearbook, aided by fellow editors Cathy Olsen, Greg Simos, Jackie McLaren, Jon Cervino, Danny Yu, Julie Lowe, Jennifer Gamble, Mary Marinac and Andrew Nichols. Their staff was composed of Christi Montrone, Garrick Peters, Paula Williams, Tom Adams, Gia Pignanelli, Kris Kaly, Amber Rowland, Albert Winnett, Shawn Cassady, Karsten Sysak, James Letter, Mary Moskal, Paula Munoz, Karla Jahne, Michelle Florin and Linnea Lundgren. Phil Starr was the moderator.

The Literary Magazine was put together by seniors Linda Mason, Michele Higham, J. Todd Pace, Yvonne Vong, Claudia Cabal and Mary Francisco, juniors John Jenks, Gen Jones, Cathy Olsen, Lynn Gooch, Kristina Obermann, Jen Gamble, Angie Stuard, Heather Mooney, Jackie McLaren, Laura Lochhead and Glenn Brown and underclassmen Noel Abel, Donna Lochhead and Stephanie Cafarelli.
Teacher Joseph Onstott advised the Folk Group, which featured John Mandeville, Teresa Harris, Tony Green, Colleen McHugh, Scott Larrabee and Trish DiBona.
Argentina was the country represented by Judge at the Model United Nations.
School was dismissed two mods early on April 16 because of an unidentified bad smell, blamed variously on a gas leak, lake stink and a scientific experiment that went awry. Some students complained of headaches from the fumes. Senior Trish DiBona was quoted wishing it had happened earlier in the day.

“The Fantasticks,” directed by Marcia Hepps, starring Sandy Seiner, Colleen McHugh, Steve Payne, Michael Cervino, Chris Perkins, Dave Geary, Michele Higham, Michelle Florin, Brian Smith, Tony Green, Ted McDonough, Corky DeVault, Teresa Harris, Jodi Howard, Jason Clark and Lynn Gooch. John Fulton was the swing understudy. Also involved in the production were Elizabeth Kirts, Alice Isbell, Patrick Diedrich, Scott Larrabee and Brenna Harris
“Listen Under Milkwood,” directed by Marcia Hepps, starring Kara Mullen, Mike McDonough, Amanda Bryant, Michael Cervino, Sean Whittler, Lynn Gooch, Julie Provost, Steve Payne, Amelia Cervino, Julie Bloss, Karla Jahne, John Fulton, Michele Higham, Alice Isbell and Fr. John Norman.
Sports
STATE CHAMPION – Wendy Bevins took the state championship at No. 3 singles to lead the girls tennis team, coached by Bob Juhasz. The No. 2 doubles team of Sabine Schaumberg and Jennifer Gamble also advanced to the 3-A state finals before settling for second. No. 1 singles player Elke Schaumberg and Christina Volla, the No. 2 singles player, reached the state semifinals, as did the No. 1 doubles team of Kristina Obermann and Wendy Talboys. Other team members were Kris Kaly, Debbie Keye, Lisa Paal, Sabine Schaumberg, Lisa Nelson, Lori Miller and Jennifer Gamble.
The football team advanced to the second round of the state playoffs before falling to Bear River, 32-23. First-year Coach John Colosimo’s Bulldogs posted a 5-4 record during the regular season and blanked Uintah 27-0 in the opening round of the tournament. Seniors on the squad included Bill Batt, Marco Biljanic, Bob Bracken, Mike Cafarelli, Jeff Fischer, Tony Green, Dan Jimenez, Donnie Jolovich, Patrick (Buddy) Mele, Todd Porter, Eric Salz, Jason Santistevan, Boe Sausedo, Kris Schanche, Paul Tarmina, Kelly Terrill, Ron Varner, Kirk Waasdorp and Albert Winnett. John Colosimo was assisted by Galey Colosimo, Tim Carr, Jim Markosian, Mike Klonizos, Ed Kinder, Chris Long, Dan John, Dan Medina and Dub Ruberts.
The girls volleyball team needed a win in its last game to qualify for the state tournament – and got it, beating West. Coach Maureen Eckroth’s squad lost its Class 3-A opener, however, having to dress in the bus because a snowstorm had delayed its arrival at Utah Valley University in Orem. Members of the team were Mary Chris Yerkovich, Kelly Shaheen, Katy Liston, Amy Adamson, Jennifer Skamnes, Kelly Lake, Julie Kedigh, Meg Higgins, Laura Hedderman, Peggy Hazel, Annje Appelhans, Carole Bertram, Rina Biljanic, Amy Burkley, Meghan Burkley, Tricia Dilley, Jennifer Hartigan, Michelle Melendez, Chalaine Zuchetto and Michelle White.
Coach Fr. John Norman’s golf team finished second in region and last at the state tournament. It was led by senior Mike Lyngle and junior Mark Riekhof. The only other senior on the team, Wally Curry, was most famous for recording a 12 on a par-3 hole. The rest of the team consisted of juniors Rhett Curry, David Gagnon, John Lindsey and Riekhof, sophomores Peter Benton and Chris Gardiner and freshmen Derek Aramaki, Barney Brockwell, Andrew Mecham and Joseph Kamizar.
Laurie Hipley and Rebecca Rhodes were co-captains of the girls cross country team, coached by Eric Houle. Members included Lisa Appelhans, Jean Gomez, Emily Eresuma, Karen Libsch, Evelyn Davies, Keiva Gilger, Mary Catrow, Christie Hall, Jane Lucero, Kris Mickler and Amber Rowland.
Coach Eric Houle’s boys cross country team was led by captain Ben Rushing. Members included Joe Smart, Mike Driscoll, Greg Brown, Mike Anderson, Dave McAughan, John Ehresman, Ricky Zylker and Warren Appelhans.
STATE CHAMPIONSHIP – The hockey team brought Judge a state championship. Coach Mike McCormick’s Bulldogs ran off to a 16-2-1 record, climaxed with an 8-4 victory over Alta in the title game of a well-organized league not sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association. Alta had handed Judge one of its two losses, 4-3, in the next-to-last league game but the Bulldogs came out firing in the tournament finale. They amassed 35 goals in the three playoff games, the win over Alta following a 7-1 thumping of West Jordan and a 20-0 shellacking of Granger. Sean Murphy was the goalie. The rest of the squad consisted of Brian Doubek, Brent Sabodski, Jason Brown, Phil Bohn, Cameron Beattie, Tom Varoz, Roque Lachica, Jason Parli, Mike Charnholm, Peter Winnett, Steve Sida, Bill Carrigan and Ken Bonacci.
Coming off the loss of seven seniors, Coach Jim Yerkovich’s boys basketball team failed to qualify for the state playoffs. The Bulldogs were led by co-captains Garrick Peters and Grant Jensen along with Jason Santistevan, Bobby Wood, Chris Gardner, Dave Pazell, Chris Sonne, Mike McGean, Micah Peters, Brett Backman, Tom Wiedenman and Rick Solvason. Yerkovich’s assistants were Gabriel Colosimo, Marty Giovacchini, Tom Bettin, John Colosimo and Danny Medina.
The girls basketball team finished fourth at the 3A state tournament, its championship hopes doomed by a semifinal loss in overtime. Coach Maureen Eckroth’s Bulldogs also lost its consolation game in OT. Her squad started the tournament impressively, thumping Carbon 47-31 and Murray 43-23. But in the semifinals, Provo hit two free throws in the final seconds of overtime to capture a 33-31 win. Judge then dropped a 44-42 overtime decision to Spanish Fork to settle for fourth. The Bulldogs were led by Kelly Shaheen, Mary Chris Yerkovich, Claudia Cabal, Janelle Jensen, Katy Liston, Jennifer Hartigan, Stacey Lamar, Michelle White, Annje Appelhans, Donette Bailey, Peggy Hazel and Lilliana Cabal.
The wrestling team won a region championship. Juniors Rick Gallegos and Chris Aiello qualified for the 3-A state tournament to lead Coach Chris Long’s team, which also featured seniors Buddy Mele, Fred Raso, Jeff Zamora and Bob Bracken. Other wrestlers were Monty Madsen, Roger Sausedo, Ken Warfield, Paul Larrabee, Paul Tafoya, Adam Jolley, Mario Raso, Dan Britt, Patrick Minnix, Dan Reilly, Matt Sweeney, Robert Chacon, Craig Miller and Chris Sotiriou. Long’s assistant coach was Bill Keeney.
Freshman Natasha Montoya was an All-State competitor in three events to lead the gymnastics team, which also featured state qualifiers Irene Petersburger, Jenny Frazer and Dawn Bonacci. Other gymnasts for Coach Mike Kimball were Michelle Zemel and Shannon Reeves.
Mark Tyler and Greg Smith were co-captains of the boys swimming team, coached by Mike Lovett and Cindy Phelps. Their swimmers included Shawn Kent, Matt Williams, Mitch Price, Collin Bollschweiler, Jim Aumann, Eric Salz, Andrew Lower, David Gutke, James Simos, Ed “Rusty” Morrison, Chris Slatore and Jim Smith.
STATE CHAMPION – Junior diver Cheryl Bylski was the state champion in diving at the 3-A girls swimming meet, where Judge also was represented by Kathy Stumpf and Jenny Frazer. Lisa Petersen was the Bulldog captain, leading Gina Lopez, Kathleen Eugster, Lise Pariseau, G.S. Swartz, Sarah Lee, Ramira Alamilla and Carolyn Thomas. Mike Lovett and Cindy Phelps also coached the girl swimmers.
The boys soccer team featured a junior-heavy lineup with James Beierschmitt, Adam Jolley, Paul Larrabee, Matt Munsey, Brendan Friar, Chris Sonne and John Petersburger. Rounding out the squad for Coach Peter Schenk were injured team leader Kelly Terrill, Jason Santistevan, Mike Cafarelli, Marco Biljanic, Craig Miller, Ron Varner, Chris Williams, Chris Mayo, Grant Jensen, Scott Hoge, Tom Barrett, Robert Vaughn and Tim Oberg.
Eric Houle and Steve Cotterell coached the boys and girls track teams. Field events were the strength of the boys team, led by Chris Aiello, who was followed closely by Mike Valdez, James Cordova, Ed Morrison, Dan Reed and Dave Murray. Adam Gavura was captain of the team, which also included Dan Wheeler, Mike Rego, Christine Hensleigh, Troy Davis, Warren Applehans, Greg Brown, Chris Givens, Dan Britt, Monte Madsen, Garrick Peters and Micah Peters.
Leading the girls track team were long-distance runner Jean Gomez, Claudia Cabal in the 400, and field athletes Amber Rowland, Rose Palm and Jean Welch. Rowland was a co-captain along with Lisa Applehans and Rebecca Rhodes. Other team members included Charity Banker, Cindi Swift, Christy Hall, Fran Crofts, Jane Gregory, Jean Gomez, Angie Applehans, Mary Chris Yerkovich, Keiva Gilger, Karen Libsch, Jane Lucero and Liliana Cabal.
The boys tennis team had high expectations after finishing third at the 3A state tournament the previous year. Coach Bob Juhasz’s squad won the region tournament, and received first round victories at state from George Matus at No. 1 singles and Todd Pace at No. 2 singles, but both lost in the next round and no Judge players were left after the first day. During the previous summer, a serve by Matus was clocked at 110 mph. Peter Heinbecker, Danny Yu, Lee Potts, Shawn Kent, Peter Winnett, Mark Riekhof, Andrew Mecham, Jerry Seiner, John Kwon and Chris O’Brien rounded out the squad.
Danny Medina coached the baseball team, which featured Bill Kavoukas, Ben Soto, Bill Gale, Jeff Fischer, Mike Allein, Thomas Wiedenman, Paul Barrutia, Todd Porter, Al Tribuiani, Chris Bertram, Mark Tyler, Steve Skamnes, Robert Chacon, James Scarcelli, Chris Leonelli, Dick Hall and Bobby Bracken.

44 graduates were members of the National Honor Society; 37 were Grail Seal Bearers, maintaining “superior” averages for five of their eight semesters. Gold honor cords representing cumulative GPAs of 3.36 or higher were worn by 49 graduates; 92% of the graduates went to college immediately. Graduates received cumulative scholarship offers of $525,000. Colleen McHugh was a Presidential Scholar.
