Sports

In the first year that girls soccer was a sanctioned sport in Utah, Judge posted a 10-0 record in league play, winning the region title. The Bulldogs then made a run to the 3-A state championship game, thrashing Mountain Crest 9-1 and blanking Ogden 2-0 before dropping a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Ben Lomond in the finals. Along the way, Judge outscored its foes 118-8. Murray fell 17-0 and 14-0, Granite 16-0 and 17-1. No opponent scored more than one goal. Toni Ouellette led Coach Wayne Voorhes’s club, earning MVP honors in region. She was joined on the All-Region team by Rachel Riser, Corrie Reilly, Dani Drew, Leigh Ann Voorhes, Chrissy Daly and Krista Guss, who also was named to the Academic All-State team. Other team members were Chelise Floyd, Olga O’Neal, Ann Lawrence, Sage Fuller, Sarah Stuyvesant, Colleen Bernhardt, Sarah Maggio, Kristen Varner and Meg Friar. Assisting Coach Voorhes were John Ouellette, Joe Veltri and Carol Floyd.

Injuries plagued the football team, which finished 2-7. Lane Cannon, Matt Davis, Toby Sausedo, Dustin Connaughton, Brian Ware, Dominic Sanone and Pat Pezel all lost significant time to various ailments, proving a significant challenge to Coach John Colosimo. A season highlight: A memorable touchdown by Eric Rogers in an 18-0 victory over Granite. Tim Clark was second team All-State in The Salt Lake Tribune, honorable mention in the Deseret News, and a member of the weekly Green Sheet newspaper’s Honor Team and All-Region. Adam Sessions and Jon Duncan also were All-Region and honorable mention in the Deseret News, while Sessions joined Clark on the Green Sheet’s All-Star team. Seniors included Ryan Cook, Patrick DePaulis, Brigham Huntsman, Todd Jackson, Todd Jorgenson, Matt Salazar and Eric Shiotani.

The girls cross country team came in second at the 3-A state girls cross country meet, led by senior captain Chelsea Deakins. She was the runner-up at the meet, completing the course in 18:57.7, 11 seconds behind Heather Witney of Springville. Box Elder won with 71 points. Judge had 87 and Springville at 100. Coach Eric Houle’s squad also won the region title, displaying solid depth. Besides Deakins, Houle’s runners featured captain Suzi Newman, Cara Tangaro and a crop of promising freshmen – Susan Nowell, Lisa Schneckloth and Amy Roberts. Other runners were Lara Brewer, Kate Leonard, Roslyn Clay, Amie Rosenburg, Molly McDonough, Deborah Duricy, Julie Swift, Heather Betit, Kristen Pederson, Jill Flaherty, Leslie Salaz and Laurie Palmerton.

Mark Ellison finished third in the 3-A boys cross country meet, leading the Bulldogs to a third-place team finish. Ben Lomond won with 50 points, followed by Ogden (63) and Judge (65). Ellison finished the course in 15:44.9, trailing a pair of Ben Lomond runners. At region, Ellison won his second straight region championship and Coach Eric Houle’s squad took the team title with five runners placing in the Top 10. Houle’s runners included captains Ellison and Mike Wolters plus Gary Green, Bryan Duberow, Ted Hansen, Tony Chiodo, Dennis Keith, Richard Essary, Jamey Sage, Brian Veltri, Jeff Parkinson, Bill Roper, John Duricy, Wes Keller, Matt Briggs, Mike Givens, Jackson Adams, Isaac Squire, Jeremiah Casting, Richard Coffey, Scot Amber, Nathan Marine and Eric Mirka.

Led by seniors Mary Herron, Julie Bennett and Catherine Johnson, the volleyball team fell short of qualifying for the 3-A state meet. Coaches Christine Perkins and Lynn Hoffman-Brouse also depended heavily on Maggie Perkins, JoAnn Jorgensen, Allison Smith, Jeanette Walsh, Stephanie Johnson, Ann Maginnis, Kristin Herron, Mindy Jorgensen, Kris Thompson, Elena Biljanic and Natalie Swain.

Bill Schleifer coached the golf team, whose only girl, Reidy Freeman, was one of its best players. The team finished third in region with a 3-4 dual-meet mark and then placed eighth at the 3-A state tournament. Joining Freeman on the links were Richard Lobato, Chris Tartaro, Travis Fisher, Mike Bapis, Bryan Jaffe, Sean Kennally, Gordon Gibbs, Joel Tangaro, Elton Anderson, Geoff Adams, Steve Ditto, Mike George, Brian Dalton and Chris Schleifer.

STATE CHAMPIONS – Boys tennis Coach Bob Juhasz fielded a veteran team that placed third in a hotly contested 3-A state tournament. Judge compiled 13 points, three behind champion Murray and two shy of runner-up Ogden. The Bulldogs were led by the doubles team of John Migliaccio and Geoff Adams, who won their state title against a duo from Sky View. No. 2 singles player Marek Pfeil, a freshman, advanced to his finals before losing to Dave Madsen of Murray. No. 1 singles player Gordon Gibbs and No. 3 singles player Josh Brown each won their first-round matchups but were knocked out in the semifinals. The No. 1 doubles team of Jon Eyre and Craig Eaton lost in the first round. The squad also included Chris Barra and Casey Foley.

The boys basketball team finished second at the prestigious Alhambra National Catholic Invitational Tournament in Cumberland, Md., a befitting end to a highly successful season. Coach Jim Yerkovich’s Bulldogs swept through region play undefeated (14-0) and entered the 3-A state tournament with a 20-1 record, the only blemish being a 92-91 loss to Highland in triple overtime. Judge won its first two state tourney games, beating Sky View 72-60 and Tooele 72-45, before falling to Ogden 62-57 in the semifinals. Demoralized, they dropped the consolation game to Jordan 70-45. But then Yerkovich took the team East, and the Bulldogs defeated Archbishop Carroll 79-72 and Gonzaga 66-64 in overtime. The championship game was a nail-biter, with Roman Catholic High School prevailing 82-79. Individually, Chris Jones became the Utah High School Activities Association’s career leader in assists, with 579 between 1986 and 1990. That included 215 in the 1988-89 season, at that point the fifth highest season total ever. Jones’s career record lasted until 2001, when it was snapped by Kalen Parsons of Green River, who handed out 637 assists. Running the floor with Jones were Rob Solvason, David White, Nathan Semerad, Mike Beierschmitt, Justin Walsh, David Hamilton, Gavin Malcom, John Yerkovich, Tim Clark, Danny Nowicki, Gary Green and Eric Leyba. The assistant coaches were Marty Giovacchini, Gabriel Colosimo, Tom Bettin, John Colosimo and Danny Medina.

The girls basketball team finished second in region with a 10-4 record (14-6 overall), then dropped an overtime thriller in the 3-A tournament opener. Sky View sank four three throws in overtime to beat the Bulldogs 49-46. Christina Albo had 15 points to lead Judge, while Catherine Johnson pitched in 10. The Bulldogs bounced back to thump Union 62-32 but were knocked out of the consolation bracket by Carbon, 53-41. Coaches Bill Schleifer and Fran Obergewitch depended on veterans Marlana Kosky, Jana Dilley, Natalie L’Etoile, JoAnn Jorgenson, Amy Green, Kris Thompson, Heather Betit, Cara Tangaro, Stephanie Johnson and Erin Hartigan.

STATE CHAMPION – Nick Satovick won two state championships, setting a 3-A state record in the backstroke, to lead the boys swimming team to third place in the competition at BYU. Satovick completed the 100-yard backstroke race in 54.49 seconds, giving him his second gold medal. He earlier won the 200-yard freestyle race in 1:46.38. The showing helped him qualify for the Junior National Swimming Competition. Judge’s medley relay team captured a state title as well, beating runner-up Murray with a time of 1:44.17. Enroute to compiling 114 team points, third behind Cedar City (182) and Murray (150), the Bulldogs also received valuable third-place points from Matt Vicario in the 100 butterfly and Ben Nowell in the 100-yard freestyle. Also swimming at state were Rashid Saber (butterfly and breaststroke), Jeff Perrick (breaststroke and 100 free) and the 400 freestyle relay team of David Chong, captain Joe Lachowski, Jeff Wright, Perrick and Nathan Etter. Earlier in the year, at the Las Vegas Gold Thanksgiving Invitational, Satovick was the meet’s second highest-scoring individual with firsts in the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes, 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Saber won the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes. Other swimmers were Geoff Adams, Mike Givens, Mike Wesley, John Mejia and Matt Shelby.

The girls swimming team finished seventh at the 3-A state meet, led by Jen Razor, Susan Nowel and Stephanie Zone. Razor and Nowell recorded fourth-place finishes, Razor in the 50-yard freestyle, Nowell in the 100. Stephanie Zone added fifth place points in the 100 breaststroke) and the medley relay team placed third. Heidi DeBirk (100 freestyle) and Clarissa Carneiro (100 breaststroke) also swam at state. Zone was captain and an enthusiastic cheerleader for her teammates, including Fayth Bloomer, Jen Baudisch, Debbie Miller, Tiffany Collins, Anna Markovich, Kim Helzer, Johanna Bailey, Nicole Bethers, Julie Lachowski, Amy Park, Jeanette Watkins, Megan Kelly, Kristin Herron, Colleen Keller and Laura Thomas.

Heavyweight Matt Davis took third at the 3-A state tournament to lead the wrestling team to a tie for 19th place with 28 points. Davis compiled a season record of 28-3, including 24 pins, and was named the region’s outstanding wrestler. Three Judge wrestlers placed second at region – Tim Metcalf (103 pounds), Colin Chummers (112) and captain Jim Gourde (140) – while Shawn Chacon (119) and Jeff Winter (171) finished fourth. Distance runners Mark Ellison and Ted Hansen led the boys track team to a seventh-place finish at the 3-A meet at BYU. Hansen and Ellison placed third and fourth in the 800-meter run and then finished fourth and fifth at 1,600 meters. Ellison added a fourth in the 3,200-meter run, accounting for many of Judge’s 30 team points, good enough for seventh behind Box Elder (75 points). The top individual Bulldog performer, however, was Toby Sausedo. He finished second in the pole vault, an event in which teammate Sean Wright placed fifth. Gavin Malcolm also performed well at state. At the Simplot Games, Ellison finished sixth out of 165 runners in the mile, while sophomore Ted Hansen placed ninth. Mike Wolters, Bryan Duberow, Jeremy Ortega, Chris Medley and Richard Coffey also competed in that race. Shotputter Nick Gibson qualified for the finals. Other team members were Tom Peters, Richard Fields, David Feolo, Pat Jefferies, Eric Vaughn, David Keith, John Duricy, Mark Backman, Lance Barry, Jerome Bennett, Eric Swartz, Nick Gibson, Brandon Biljanic, Santino Aloia, Richard Coffey, Jason Mihalopoulous, Isaac Squire, Eric Konnick, Andrew Moeller, Tim Roelofs, Bill Roper, Brian Veltri, Bryan Duberow, Gary Green, Jeff Parkinson, Ted Vogt, Danny Nowicki, Ted Hansen, Matt Briggs, Pat DePaulis, Matt Salazar, John Telford, Justin Walsh, Mike Giles, Richard Essary, Franco Aloia, Clay Cash, Brandon Davis, James Kimball, Sean Wright, Chris Medley, Jeremy Ortega, Dennis Keith and Chris Rilk. I wanted to win so bad I could taste it.” Deakins also finished second in the 1,600-meter run and fourth in the 800, leading the Bulldogs to a tie for fifth place in the meet. Judge scored 31, same as Wasatch, far behind champion Springville’s 107 points. Jana Dilley also had a strong meet for the Bulldogs, with a second-place finish in the 400-meter run and a sixth in the 200. Also contributing points to the Judge total were Katie McHugh and Jen Calame, ninth and tenth in the 3,200. The coaching staff also relied upon Toni Ouellette, Denise Reynolds, Grace Ann McDonough, Jana Dilley, Egin Chen, Erin Hartigan, Kim Hutton, Bree LaBenta, Serene Begum, Jen Calame, Jen Razor, Heidi Petersen, Amy Roberts, Katie Flattery, Molly Gras, Emily Rasmussen, Nicole Nicholson, Megan Sherry, Heather Betit, Pamela Barrett, Stephanie Gleave, Amy Gurney, Donna Boes, Mary Baron, Adia Waldburger, Julie Lachowski, Holly Barker, Amanda Moxley, Joanna Bailey, Laurie Palmerton, Jenny Petersen, Megan Welsh, Sarah Maggio, Amy Murphy, Ronielle Peltier, Amee Rosenburg, Leslie Salaz, Rebecca Huffman, Brittany Watney, Karen Bauer, Albertina Cabal, Kristen Garwood and Susan Nowell. Earlier in the year at the Simplot Games, Judge’s top milers were McHugh, Lisa Schneckloth and Lara Brewer.

STATE CHAMPION – After an undefeated region season, hopes for a repeat state championship in girls tennis were realistic. And the Bulldogs had a shot, advancing three singles players and a doubles team to the finals. But all five Ogden entries made it to 3-A girls tennis title matches, and the Tigers won three of four head-to-head encounters with Bulldogs. Only No. 3 singles player Stephanie Tonin emerged victorious for Judge, winning a hard-fought 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 match against Ogden’s Jill Starley. Consequently, Coach Bob Juhasz’s Bulldogs had to settle for second place with 20 points, eight behind Ogden. Becky Markosian dropped her finals match at No. 1 singles to Nicky Wangsgard, Chelsea Deakins fell similarly at No. 2 and the No. 2 doubles team of Amanda Smith and Hadley Becker could not keep up with their Ogden counterparts. The No. 1 doubles team of Kris Martinez and Erin Gamble made it to the semifinals before losing. Genevieve Kiley and Jia Jia Chen also were on the team.

The boys soccer team advanced to the finals of the 3-A tournament, where it was beaten on a last-minute goal by a Jordan player who hadn’t scored all year. That 1-0 setback followed a double overtime shootout victory over Woods Cross (won on goals by Brian McGinley, Mike DiGregorio, Chad Mellison and Jayson Kelker) and a 3-1 triumph over Springville. David Morris, Jamey Sage and Mike Stuyvesant scored the goals. Other team members were Bryan Jaffe, Mike Beierschmitt, Matt Woolley, J.J. Sweeney, Joe Lachowski, Matt Robinson, Nathan Semerad and Jim Berry. The coaches were Peter Schenk and Hung Gi.

Michelle Aragon was the top pitcher and her battery mate, catcher Jennifer Cos, was one of the top hitters on the softball team, which advanced to the 3-A softball tournament but dropped its opening round game to Bear River, 8-5.
