During the Summer

The Bulldog Bulletin, the newsletter for new students and their families, noted that 98% of the Class of 2016 went to college; Judge’s average ACT composite score was 25, far better than the national average of 21. In its first 96 years, Judge won 69 state championships and 90 region titles; 80% of the student body participated in at least one sport or activity the previous year. Minorities represented 32% of the student body, which came from 22 different elementary and middle schools. Students commuted from Ogden, Tooele, Park City, Heber and Kamas; 66% of students received some financial aid; 33% of the incoming freshman class was not Catholic.

Philip Start, Class of 2016, spent two weeks in Madagascar as a volunteer with Youthlinc – an organization in which his sisters Olivia and Claudia already had served – and was a mentor for senior-to-be Ben Butcher, who taught English in Guatemala for the service organization.

Girls soccer coach Cassadie Nelson played host to Goals for Girls, an international program designed to let girls help less fortunate girls through soccer. The group brought local refugee girls to a clinic in the Judge gym. Five Bulldog players hoped to go to India over Christmas break to teach soccer skills there.

Ellie Harmston, Olivia Colman and Lindsey Morton were named All-Americans at the Utah Cheer Association’s camp in June. The Bulldogs took first in cheer, second in extreme routines and “game day.”

The Year

National Merit Scholar: Victoria Stevens

Twins were a trademark of this year’s student body. The Junior Class, in particular, had seven pairs. They were Sophie and Anna Ward, Ryan and Ellie McCoy, Lindsay and Chelsea Hafer, Kathleen and John Jensen, Tess and Chris McTeague, Abby and Charlie Berceau, and Aurora and Reese Francone. The sophomore class had a pair of twins – Shea and Allison Ryan, and Lindsay and Diana Cruz-Chunga. And four sets of twins filled the freshman roster – Khristina and Cassandra Wilsak, Sydney and Sophia Ewing, Emily and Dominic Malouf, and Christian and Michael Eggert. Not to be outdone, the Pierce family topped them all with triplets in the junior class – Hailey, Chloe and Peyton. The yearbook also noted that five faculty members had twins – Dasch Houdeshel, Aida Shepherd, Joan Jensen, Christy Koles and James Witucki.

Markie Hoggan and Olivia Colman were captains of the Cheer Squad, which included seniors Abigail Garside, Ellie Harmston, Mae Rodgers and Tommy Kelly along with Ari Elorreaga, Savannah Nord, Isabella Dodson, Lauren Mitchell, Emma Graham, Zoe Baumann, Lindsey Morton, Kayla Kaleel-Jarvis, Kayla Suchar, Viviana Garcia, Caroline Hinckley, Christina Valentine, Gabrielle Parker, Ella Kittrell and Addison Hildreth.

“Masquerade” was the theme of the Homecoming Ball.

The Bulldog Press worked closely with the PBS NewsHour, producing videos on life at Judge and community issues. It was run by editors Katie Scott, Chloe Schafer and Mary Oliver. Staff members included Hugh McGirt, Jackson Start, Jack Boomer, Sean Parent, Jacob Frausto, Sean Hemmersmeier, Jack Kempton, Ben Butcher and Foster Dennin. Chris Sloan was the adviser.

The Chinese language program attracted Grace Clinton, Cora Hill, Jiacheng Zhang, Hannah Qi, Jacqueline Muffler, Grace Schmidt, Qiqi Chen, Jessica Oulona, Thua Hoang, Ahn Dang, Yajie Chen, Jing Chen, Thy Minh Cao, Nghi Nguyen, Roman Ashdown, Sharlee Lin, Missy Fang and Seiji Nagasawa. Their teacher was Annie Perng.

The Robotics Team, known as JudgeMent Call, included Miriam Smith, Kyle Williams, John Matthews, Wesley Zumwalt, Joseph Thomas, Penelope Richardson, Eric Hall, Raymond Yang, Henry Anderson, Declan Van Uitert, Chelsea Hafer, Emma Jones, Ryan Pringle and Grace Wise.

Led by President Ellisandra Cordova, the Interact Club held a banquet to raise funds for Orphan Relief and Rescue, a nonprofit organization that helped children subject to “child trafficking, abuse and needless suffering” in Benin and Liberia. Members included Audrey Hendarto, Emma Dingman, Hailey Pierce, Hannah Vazquez, Anna Howard, Malia Abramson, Katherine MacPhail, Alexandria Turner, Mason Orr, Erica Maggelet, Peyton Pierce, Gwendolyn Orme and Skye Fredericks. Karla Keller was the club adviser.

Participating in George Angelo’s Sports Medicine program were Eric Bambabate, Miyalla Tarver, John Jensen, Shea Ryan, Tristan Brockbank, Lauren Larson, Matthew Snyder, Robert Cheuvront, Nate Maudlin, Juliana Valentine, Brandon Benson and Travis Nolan.

The National Honor Society gathered nearly 1,200 books and raised $600 for the African Library Project, which collected reading materials for Motjane High School in the African country of Swaziland. “Mythos” was the theme of the Spring Dance Concert. Dance Company officers were Chloe Schafer, Ella Johnson, Isabella Buoscio and Abbi Mancini. Dancers included Isabella Dodson, Gabe Gaitan, Skylar Lister, Robin Young, Karina Daghlian, Genevieve Liston, Tess McTeague, Mirabella Efstratis, Ceceli Riffo-Drecksel, Grace Driffill, Zoe Bauman, Anna Jackson, Abigail Garside, Duy Ramirez and Ella Johnson. One of their performances this year was the “Bieber Boogie,” featuring dances to “some of singer Justin Bieber’s biggest hits.”

Sports

Quarterback Jack Boomer and running back/defensive end Sport Falemaka were the keys for Coach James Cordova’s football team, which fell short of qualifying for the 3-AA state tournament. The squad included Jackson Baird, Miguel Saldivar, Sean Hemmersmeier, Andreas Cordova, Josh Ballard, Alex Barnett, Sam Cassel, Ryan Kenny, Jackson Roberts, Seiji Nagasawa, Jack Boomer, Alex Ellis, Bobby Lopez, Hatcher Blair, Jared Masih, Jason Lovato, Casey Bouillon, Zach Thomas, Kayden Milburn, Parker Edgington, Johannes Hester, Brandon Benson, Jack Naylor, Jack Maloney, Colin Hilton, Tanner Jones, Truman Hight, Casey Randazzo, Andrew Cotter, Parker Hansen, Max Koszinowski, Riley Walker, Peter “P.J.” Mannebach, Chavo Salazar, Carlos Padillo, Jacob Frausto, Ethan Mitchell, Jaciel Tinoco-Guzman, Deng Deng, Alex Snarr, Matthew Cotter, Rene Valles, Daniel Payne and Kok Daw. The girls cross country team finished 16th in the 4-A state meet, compiling 414 points. Timpanogos won with 85. Judge’s top two runners finished in 66th and 68th places, the rest of the state team in 85th, 95th, 100th, 109th and 111th. Seniors Katie Scott and Allie Eggert led Coach Jason Heideman’s team, which also featured Madison Tartaro, Kendall Neuman, Isabella Jones, Madelyn Bossarte, Sierra Bieling, Kaya Heideman, Abigayle Kendall, Emily Malouf, Jessica Mulder, Hannah Speckman and Cheryl Winters.

Eric Heideman was the lone Judge runner to qualify for the 4-A cross country championship after the boys team finished fifth in region. His teammates included Jackson Start, Zach Shubella, Sean Parent, Anthony Robinson, Luke Chamberlain, Jonathan Barnhart, Max Brown, Henry Anderson, Zak Baumann, Mark Brunetti, Christopher Clyne, Michael Eggert, Isaac Guynn, Tommy Kelly, Henry Mulligan, Jacob Noorda, William Riley, Michael Ryon and Matthew Snyder. The team was coached by Jason Heideman.

A fourth-place finish in region lifted the girls volleyball team to the 4-A state tournament, where the Bulldogs lost in the first round to Bountiful (9-25, 8-25, 15-18) and then to Wasatch. Senior Rose Anna Tafaoialii led the team in kills and was a team captain, along with fellow seniors Anna Lower, Grace Bruggers, Kathleen Wilkerson, Alea Bristow, Ella Johnson and Hannah Vazquez. Rounding out the squad for Coach Eric Howard were Mia Kowalczyk, Hailey Pierce, Peyton Pierce, Chloe Pierce, Sophia Gross, Lauren Pasternak, Erica Maggelet and Olivia Sauer.

Judge picked up two points at the 4-A girls tennis tournament with first-round wins by Katherine McPhail in No. 1 singles and the No.1 doubles team of Ellie MCCoy and Olivia Anderson. That lifted Judge to a 12th-place finish in the meet at Liberty Park. Olympus won with 23 points. Captain Emily Rougelot played No. 2 singles, Jessica Jenny was at No. 3, while the No. 2 doubles team was Anna Drossos and Chloe Lloyd. The rest of Coach Tracey Valentine’s team consisted of Maggie Wallace, Anna Wills, Hailey Maggelet, Maggie Lewis, Amy Robinson, Genevieve Liston, Veronica Start, Hailey Grandy, Emma Wills, Clara Williamson, Juliana Valentine, Ruby Phillips, Abigail Runnels, Qiqi Chen, Johanna Graeff, Kira Langell, Sara Bachmeier, Sarah Jepsen, Emma Diazmontes, Pauline Simonson and Kelly Sherman.

Coached by Nate Olson and Tyler Stack, the boys golf team was held scoreless in the 4-A tournament but did qualify senior captain Ben Butcher, fellow senior Jack Cawdery, juniors Carter Holyoak and Simon Chamness, and freshmen Graham Hodell and Sam Gaskill. Other golfers were Ethan Iverson, Albert Sanchez, Matthew Benvegnu, Nathan Callahan, Dylan Jack, Miguel Antola, Dominic Malouf, Carter Titmus, Nick Williams, Riley Bouillon and Thomas Silas.

The girls soccer team did not qualify for the 4-A state tournament. Coached by Cassadie and Steve Nelson, the Bulldogs were led by five senior captains – Haley Auer, Samantha Kendall, Skylar Lister, Annika Dean and Lily Nelson. Coached by Paul Shiramizu, the girls basketball team made the most impressive run of any Judge athletic team since the school moved up to the 4-A ranks. The Bulldogs advanced to the state championship game, where it battled a talented Skyline team nose-to-nose throughout the game, ultimately losing 60-57 in overtime when Skyline converted its free throws in the clutch. Seniors Vanessa Austin, Mayree Ellis, Haley Auer, Skylar Lister and Samantha Kendall led the Bulldogs, who beat Skyline on Senior Night by 11 points. The journey to the championship game involved a most-dramatic quarterfinal victory against East. With the score tied 43-43 and just six seconds left, Judge point guard Haley Auer took an inbounds pass, dribbled the length of the court and tossed up a floater from five feet out. It went in – her only points of the game – and Judge advanced to face fourth-ranked Box Elder. Austin led the way for Judge against the Bees, scoring 14 points and pulling down 15 rebounds in a 45-34 upset victory. In the tournament opener, Judge beat a tough Wasatch team 35-32. Shiramizu’s Bulldogs also featured Miyalla Tarver, Emily Garcia, Emily Malouf, Sara Bachmeier, Ceceli Riffo-Drecksel, Mary Malouf, Abbey Storms, Cicely Foley, Mackenzie Villegas, Jazlynne Parry Villavicencio, Allison Ryan, Mary Muro Pardo, Victoria Garcia, Avery Young, Sophia Cordova, Shea Ryan, Olivia Haddadin and Isabella Jones. His assistant coaches were Stan Nakamura, James Lee, Lori Jones and Mele Vaisima.

Tim Gardner took over the boys basketball team, which finished the season 9-14 and fell short of qualifying for the 4-A state tournament. The Bulldogs were led by seniors Cy Austin, Nate Maudlin and Alan Lang. Gardner’s young squad also relied upon Kayden Milburn, Parker Edgington, Nathan Callahan, Andrew Cotter, Christopher James, Simon Chamness, Cameron Lundy, Deng Deng, Jalen Thompson, Makhiah Tarver Jr., Bishop Brown, Got Daw and Brody Powers. Chris McGill was assistant coach. Ethan Hirabayashi was the manager.

The girls swimming team finished eighth at the 4-A state meet with 130 points, well behind the 288.5-point total of champion Skyline. Caroline Yannelli led the way with podium showings in the 100 breaststroke (4th) and 200 individual medley (6th). Amani Jammoul also reached the podium with a fifth in the 100 butterfly and she placed 13th in the 100 backstroke. Also scoring individual points for the Bulldogs were Anna Shum, 9th in the 100 butterfly; Erin Morgan, 15th in the 200 IM and 18th in the 100 backstroke; and Hailey Grandy, 12th in the 500 and 13th in the 200. The 200-yard medley relay team of Erin Morgan, Caroline Yannelli, Anna Shum and Amani Jammoul finished fourth. Placing 7th was the 400 freestyle relay team of Amani jammoul,. Erin Morgan, Caroline Yannelli and Victoria Stevens. She also swam the anchor leg of the 12th place 200 freestyle relay squad with Anna Shum, Heather Boland and Jailey Grandy. Bulldog swimmers included Hailey Warden (state team), Melissa Aguilar, Allie Eggert, Hannah Kelly, Anna Ward, Alexandra Soran and Addie Freeman.

Small numbers limited the boys swimming team’s chances for points and the Bulldogs did not score at the 4-A state meet. Louis Fisher and Tommy Kelly were team captains. Reese Francone was a veteran swimmer.

Captain Anna Howard shot a two-day total of 150 to finish 17th at the 4-A girls golf tournament at Meadowbrook Golf Course. Teammates Sofia Clark and Sophia Gross tied for 34th with 139s in the Stableford scoring system. Rounding out the team for Coaches Nate Olson and Tyler Stack were Kathleen Wilkerson, Chelsea Hafer, Erica Maggelet, Markie Hoggan, Araceli Blake, Gabbie Parker, Hannah Gose, Maggie Baillie, Ellie McCoy, Victoria Garcia, Chloe Pierce, Peyton Pierce, Missy Fang and Hailey Pierce.

The boys baseball team qualified for the 4-A state tournament as its region’s No. 4 seed. The Bulldogs dropped the opener 11-1 to Timpview before bouncing back to beat Woods Cross 8-4 in the first consolation-bracket contest. Judge’s run ended the next game, however, a 7-3 setback to Corner Canyon. Jack Boomer, Seiji Nagasawa and Sam Cassel were captains of the team, which featured Cy Austin, Joey Mancini, Trevor Montrone, Tom Riley, Shane Calufetti, Zach Shubella, Alex Niemann, Chris McTeague, Nathan Callahan, Alex Carrillo, Peter Callahan, Ronnie Termunde, Timothy Jerome, Koji Nagata-Brown and Keaton Yoshinaga. Jesse Carrillo was the head coach. His assistants were Brian Moore and Rolen Yoshinaga. Danny Brown was manager.

Luke Pearson played No. 1 singles for the boys tennis team, which did not qualify any competitors for the tough 4-A tournament. Coach Jonathan Tsu’s lineup also included Tony Robinson at No. 2 singles, Jake Behnken at No. 3, the No. 1 doubles team of Jack Cawdery and Ryusei Tsuda and the No. 2 doubles team of Carter Titmus and Simon Briesacher. Rounding out the squad were Isaac Guynn, Edward Ryon, Matt Benvegnu, Taoye Lu, Max Nelson, Hunter Crosland, Ravijot Ghuman, Hatcher Blair, Raymond Yang, Oliver Oelsner, Edward Ryan and Chanakya Duggineni.

The girls track team scored 26 points at the 4-A meet, good enough for ninth place behind champion Box Elder (101). Leading the Bulldogs were seniors Vanessa Austin, Annika Dean, Mayree Ellis, Skylar Lister, Katie Scott and Rose Tafaoialli. The squad included Sophia Kennedy Overfelt, Sara Bachmeier, Jenessa Jimoh, Cicely Foley, Katherine Kranz, Victoria Garcia, Anna Shum, Beth Leo, Jessica Mulder, Mary Malouf, McKenzie Mosley, Nina Marcus, Sidnee Campbell, Allison Ryan, Sophie Campbell, Shea Ryan, Madeleine Gaztambide, Jazlynne Parry Villavicencio, Elena Justice, Jillian Nelson, McKayla Murchison, Sierra Bieling, Madison Tartaro, Madelyn Bossarte, Abbey Storms, Kaila Bunting, Jisenia Rico, Sandra Contreras, Victoria Perrick, Emmy Darling, Emily Malouf, Kaya Heideman, Abigayle Kendall, Amaia Horyna and Isabella Jones. No points were scored by boys track team members at the 4-A state meet, won by Springville with 70.5. The Bulldogs had only four seniors – Sam Cassel, Eric Heideman, Josh Davies and Kyle Kelley – to go with underclassmen Casey Bouillon, Ethan Hirabayashi, Parker Edgington, Fredrick Charles, Ravijot Ghuman, Zachary Thomas, Parker Hansen, Sebastian Suyoto, Kayden Milburn, Jacob Noorda, Djivan Black, Jalen Thompson, Christopher Clyne, Jack Bithell, Strom Huber, Deng Deng, Peter “P.J.” Mannebach, Joseph Thomas, Griffin Mozdy, Matthew Snyder, Sean Parent, Anthony Redding, Anthony Richardson, Gedeon Baende, Jack Terrill, Jonathan Barnhart, Timothy Tanga, Zak Baumann, Roman Scarcelli, Riley Bouillon, Chase Jones, Maxwell Brown, Ethan Hall, Nicholas Bruno and Michael Eggert. The coaches were Mike Ashton and Stan Finn.

The softball team did not qualify for the 4-A state tournament, despite the best efforts of coaches Isaac Soria and Adam Galvez and captains Sophia Cordova, Reagan Vigil and Olivia Haddadin. The roster included Melissa Aguilar, BayLa Anderson, Adrienna Chacon, Alexis DeTemple, Marisela Garcia, Oakley Hill, Sophia Patillo, Carin Reeves, Miriam Smith, Alexandra Soran, Veronica Start, Clara Williamson and Emma Wills. Caleigh Knight was the manager.

The boys soccer team had only five seniors – Jason Ahn, Eric Bambabate, Nathan Thomas, Albert Sanchez and Thomas Oliver – and did not qualify for the 4-A state tournament. Juniors were Ferdinand Bambabate, Taoye Lu, Connor McDonough, Logan Seat, Sam Schmiett and Anthony Alcocer, while the sophomores were Joe Paul, Cameron Lundy, Anthony Aguilar Padilla, Jaime Galindo and Caleb Castro. He shared goalkeeping duties with Jaciel Tinoko-Guzman. The coaches were Kelly Terrill, Joseph Alamilla, Rick Razzeca and Natalie Akiyama.

Captains Gabe Gaitan, Ben Butcher and Ryan Kenny led the boys lacrosse team, which also featured seniors Sean Hemmersmeier, Noah Elorreaga, Foster Dennin and Jackson Baird. The Bulldog roster included Giovanni Crosswhite, Dominic Malouf, Henry Mulligan, Ryder Patano, Conor Boyle, Nick Markosian, Zach Thomas, Max Koszinowski, Max Pereira, Brandon Benson, Charlie Vandersteen, Tommy Walz, Rene Valles, Daniel Payne, Salvador Salazar, Will Anderson, Johnny Walz, Colin Hilton, Tanner Jones, Jack Maloney, Charlie Berceau, Zach Jerome, Alexander Snarr, Jacob Haertel, Nick Williams, Andrew Turner, Alexander Dodge, Johannes Hester, Matthew Lamy and Connor Kenny. Dan Dugan was the head coach. His assistants were Joaquin Mixco, Dominic Conti and Pace Cranney.

Coach Kaely Kernan’s girls lacrosse team revolved around senior captains Genevieve Liston, Grace Driffill and Maddie Moeller along with classmates Emma Dingman, Grace Greis, Marren Silcox and Malia Abramson. The rest of the squad consisted of Katie Feldman, Hannah Hilton, Anna Thomas, Penelope Richardson, Ruby Phillips, Eleanor Mancheski, Kate Mattena, Stephanie Nolan, Emmanuela Androulidakis, Anna Drossos, Kaitlin Sessions, Kayla Suchar, Wesley Zumwalt, Christina Valentine, Maggie Harmston, Grace Wise, Kathryn Wills, Amy Robinson, Audrey Hendarto, Pauline Simonson, Vivian Lundeen and Estelle Madsen. Kernan was assisted by Amelia Daynes and Lisa Webber.

Andrew Cotter, Edward Ryon and Tony Robinson were co-captains of the Ultimate Frisbee team, which included Matt Benvegnu, Jean-Jules Flesher, Hatcher Blair, Jonghyuk “Kevin” Lee, Isaac Guynn, J.D. Villareal, Tommy Kelly, Nick Turner, Jonathan Barnhart, Hunter Crosland, Truman Hight, Oliver Oelsner, Zach Shubella, Ian Burningham, Jack Krump, Ethan Hirabayashi, Reese Francone, Thomas Oliver, Billy Riley, Casey Randazzo and Reuben Stromquist.

The boys volleyball team featured captains Riley Bouillon and Ozzie Valdez and players Matthew Cotter, Garrett Boland, Jimmy Cao, Cooper Morton, Christian Eggert, Zak Baumann, Sam Connor, Casey Randazzo and Casey Bouillon. The coaches were Ashleigh Hamilton and Adam Warden.
