MODERATES AT JUDGE

• Bowling
• Yearbook

An alumna of Judge Memorial’s class of 1993, Joan Brand has been an educator for Judge Memorial since 2001. She teaches U.S. History, AP U.S. History, AP Psychology and Yearbook. Additionally, she oversees the graduation committee, moderates the Judge bowling club, yearbook, and is the faculty representative on the School Board. When not with her students, Ms. Brand enjoys bowling, singing, camping and spending time with her children.

A deeply rooted connection to her community, and a love of learning is evident in Ms. Brand's career path in education that spans over 20 years. Beginning in 1997, she taught classes in social studies, religion, and science for middle school at Blessed Sacrament School. She taught world history and religion for St. John the Baptist Middle School before joining the religion department of her alma mater in 2001. While at Judge Memorial, her involvement in a variety of areas has been invaluable. She served as the religion department chair for five years, she implemented and taught an introduction to technology course for incoming students for the technology department, and currently enjoys being part of the social studies department.

For Ms. Brand, her favorite part of teaching is “her students.” She hopes that she can be a source of motivation for her students, in a similar way that one of her own high school teachers was for her, “Dan John as a teacher inspired me daily to be a better person when I was his student.” Her mother, a retired teacher and 44 year veteran in the Catholic School system in Utah, has inspired Ms. Brand to see the best in every student.

One of Ms. Brand's favorite quotes comes from Emily Dickinson:

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
